The Keech-Byram Drought Index was specifically devised in 1968 to assess the risk of fire. It attempts to measure soil moisture deficiency by accounting for evaporation, transpiration (water from plants), and precipitation. The index ranges from zero, the point of no moisture deficiency, to 800, the maximum drought that is possible.
