Spring storms, many severe, continue to cause drought to retreat across the U.S., especially in the Midwest and eastern Plains. A few areas did worsen, including Washington, the Colorado/Kansas border, and Florida. As of May 7, 2024, 12.66% of the U.S. and Puerto Rico and 15.08% of the lower 48 states are in drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
