Quarterly Climate Impacts and Outlook for the Midwest Region for June - August 2021. Dated September 2021.

The Summer of 2021 was warm across most of the Midwest, with temperatures 1-5°F above normal. The unseasonably warm temperatures were felt most towards the north.  Precipitation was quite variable across the Midwest this summer, with generally wetter conditions to the east and drier conditions in the northwest portions of the region. In central and eastern areas of the Midwest, several heavy rain events led to above-normal precipitation accumulation.

Winter temperatures averaged to within a few degrees of normal across the region, but averaging hid the big temperature swings seen this winter.  Winter precipitation was generally below normal across the Midwest.

Quarterly Climate Impacts and Outlook for the Midwest Region for September – November 2020. Dated December 2020.

Precipitation totals in the Midwest ranged from less than 50% of normal in northwestern Minnesota to more than 150% of normal in eastern Iowa. Many areas were near normal. Fall temperatures were within 2°F of normal across the Midwest. After more than 1,000 record low daily temperatures in the last half of October, the first 11 days of November saw more than 1,500 record-high daily temperatures.

Temperatures were above normal, particularly in the northern half of the Midwest. For the region, the summer ranked as the 18th warmest in 126 years. Summer precipitation across the region varied considerably. Iowa had its 14th driest summer, while Kentucky recorded its 17th wettest summer.

Winter temperatures averaged near normal in the northwest and above normal across the rest of the region for the season as a whole.  Precipitation was above normal for most of the Midwest and much above normal in the extreme northern areas and also the extreme southeastern areas. An area that covered much of Iowa, northern Missouri, northwestern Illinois, and the southwestern corner of Wisconsin had below-normal precipitation for the season.

Winter temperatures for the 3-month period of December to February ranged from a few degrees below normal in the northwest to a few degrees above normal in the southeast.  Precipitation was well above normal in the Midwest, ranking as the third wettest winter back to 1895.
