Despite being a humid region, droughts pose a serious threat to the southeastern United States. Recent events, including flash droughts, have caused substantial impacts to agriculture, forestry, water resources, and other sectors and stakeholders. The drought planning literature cites reduced fragmentation and increased coordination as critical needs to improving drought preparedness and response.

Almost all of the watershed experienced temperatures within two degrees of normal, with most experiencing temperatures 0–2 degrees above normal. A few locations along the coast of Virginia, southern Maryland, central Pennsylvania, and southern New York experienced temperatures between 2 and 3 degrees above normal.

Temperatures were above average across most of the Southeast this summer. The greatest departures (2–4 degrees F) were found across the southern tier of the region. Precipitation was highly variable across the Southeast this summer.

Quarterly Climate Impacts and Outlook for the Mid-Atlantic Region for March–May 2022. Dated June 2022.

Temperatures were generally within two degrees of normal for the spring season across the Mid-Atlantic. This is similar to what was observed for the preceding summer, fall, and winter seasons. The region generally experienced slightly wetter than normal conditions, with most locations experiencing between 100% and 125% of their normal spring precipitation amounts.

Above-average temperatures were recorded over the entire Southeast, with much of Florida and eastern North Carolina observing more than 2°F above normal. Precipitation ranged from below average in the eastern Carolinas, southern Florida, and Puerto Rico, to above average in northern Florida, including the Florida Panhandle and Alabama.

Temperatures were generally a few degrees above normal across the region for the winter season. This was largely due to a warmer month of December, with six sites recording their second warmest December on record. The southern and eastern portions of the region experienced below normal precipitation, while areas to the west generally experienced slightly above normal precipitation.

Quarterly Climate Impacts and Outlook for the Southeast Region for December 2021 - February 2022. Dated March 2022.

Winter temperatures across the region were topsy-turvy, with December and February much above average and January slightly below average.  Precipitation was below average for much of the region this winter. However, San Juan, PR observed its wettest February on record at 11.7 inches of precipitation, more than 9 inches above normal.
