Extreme to Exceptional Drought Worsens in Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa Since Mid-July Drought conditions have increased in severity and coverage across the central United States since mid-July, particularly in MO, KS, IA, MI, MN, ND, and SD. Despite some recent rains, exceptional drought(D4) persists in KS and MO. Agriculture and water supply have been the most negatively affected by this summer’s drought conditions. Some of the recent rainfall may help soybeans and pasture recovery, but it likely fell too late to help stressed corn.

Drought over the U.S. Northern Great Plains, defined here as Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota, produced ‘Billion Dollar Disasters’ in 1988 and 2017. The principal cause of the 2017 drought was the record-low precipitation over much of northeastern Montana and western North Dakota, and near-record-low precipitation over central South Dakota during May-July.

Significant Drought Impacts Reported in Kansas, Missouri, Southeast Iowa

Drought Easing but Extreme Drought Lingers in Southern Plains. Robust Monsoon Anticipated. Drought peaked in May in northwest Oklahoma and the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.

Several strong low pressure systems in March and April brought with them near-to-record-breaking cold temperatures as well as late season winter precipitation events. By contrast, May saw above-normal conditions for the majority of the basin.
