Developing Tailored Drought Monitoring Products for the State of Vermont

The Northeast Regional Climate Center is collaborating with the Vermont State Climatologist at the University of Vermont to develop drought and climate monitoring resources to better serve the Vermont State Drought Task Force. The Task Force identified a need for timely, relevant, and frequently updated drought monitoring tools for the state through a newly developed portal. This portal will help the Office of the Vermont State Climatologist continuously monitor conditions to improve drought early warning, which will support more rapid activation of the Drought Task Force.

What to expect from this research
- Collaborate with the Vermont State Climatologist to identify drought monitoring needs in the state and engage with the State Drought Task Force to identify products and services to facilitate drought preparedness and monitoring.
- Develop a suite of Vermont-specific real-time drought products focused on precipitation, streamflow, groundwater, and snowpack deficits and application of specific drought indices, such as the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI).
- Develop a portal through which these data products are available to the Vermont State Climatologist, State Drought Task Force, and the public.
- Solicit continued feedback from the State Drought Task Force to further evaluate the portal and identify information gaps.
