The Southwest saw record-setting snowpack over the past winter. Short-term drought in the region has greatly improved. As the region transitions to summer, what will the melting snowpack mean for reservoir storage and long-term drought? This webinar looked at current and forecasted drought conditions for Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Utah and then highlighted the new State pages on drought.gov.

Current Conditions and Drought Outlook

Speaker: Brian Fuchs | National Drought Mitigation Center, University of Nebraska–Lincoln

  • Since the beginning of the water year, there has been substantial improvement in drought conditions across the Southwest.
  • Over the past 12 months drought has improved across the Southwest, such that in June 2022 97% of the region was in drought, and in June 2023 only 9% of the region was in drought.
  • Outlooks suggest elevated chances for warmer-than-average temperatures in the summer, and the potential for below-average precipitation in the monsoon season.
