Drought in Kansas

Kansas has a long history with drought. During the "Dust Bowl" era of the 1930s, severe drought led to massive soil erosion and "black blizzards" that buried entire farmsteads. This period remains the state's most significant ecological and economic catastrophe. 

Kansas faces cycles of drought. While the Dust Bowl of the 1930s is the most famous drought in the region, the 1952–1957 drought had more significant precipitation deficits. The 1950s drought remains the planning benchmark, or “drought of record,” for hydrologic application in eastern Kansas reservoirs. Pre-historical data, such as tree-rings and sand stone layers indicate a drought as severe as the Dust Bowl occurs, on average, three to four times a century for western Kansas and about once per century for eastern Kansas. 

In the 21st century, Kansas continued to grapple with intense, high-stakes drought cycles, including major drought events in 2011–2014 and 2022–2023. In 2011, agricultural losses in Kansas exceeded $1.7 billion. These modern episodes are often characterized by "flash droughts"—rapid-onset droughts driven by extreme heat and high winds. In response to the early 2010s drought, NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) launched the Southern Plains Drought Early Warning System (DEWS). The Southern Plains DEWS is a network of state, regional and national partners that share information and coordinate actions to support communities in the region preparing for and coping with drought. 

The recurring nature of these and modern droughts has placed immense pressure on the Ogallala Aquifer, the primary water source for western Kansas. As groundwater levels decline, the state increasingly focuses on innovative water management and drought-resilient crops to sustain its massive agricultural output in an increasingly volatile climate. The impacts of drought on Kansas agriculture and livestock production can linger for several years after the drought ends.

Historical Drought Conditions in Kansas

Drought is a normal climate pattern that has occurred in varying degrees of length, severity, and size throughout history. U.S. Drought Monitor

The U.S. Drought Monitor (2000–present) depicts the location and intensity of drought across the country. Every Thursday, authors from NOAA, USDA, and the National Drought Mitigation Center produce a new map based on their assessments of the best available data and input from local observers. The map uses five categories: Abnormally Dry (D0), showing areas that may be going into or are coming out of drought, and four levels of drought (D1–D4). Learn more.
