Drought in Texas

Texas is historically prone to drought. Geologic evidence shows long drought periods have occurred in Texas for over 10,000 years. Notable past events include the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, the 1950s drought (the "drought of record" for much of the state), and the intense 2010-2015 drought. More recently, the 2020-2025 drought was characterized by periods of rapid intensification, or "flash drought," and periods of partial recovery. During this recent extended drought period, Texas experienced widespread crop failures, reduced herd numbers, record-low water levels, and increased wildfires. 

Texas sits at the same latitude as the Sahara Desert. At this latitude the influence of the sub-tropical ridge, a global-scale high-pressure pattern, delivers long dry spells through the summer months. But, Texas sits along the Gulf of America and can also experience intense deluges as tropical systems move north from the Gulf. The combination of these opposing climate forces make Texas a state of extremes, rapidly swinging from drought to flood and back. This "weather whiplash" presents a unique challenge when planning and preparing for drought.  

Texas also experiences a pronounced east-west precipitation gradient. Eastern Texas—nearer to moisture from the Gulf—is very wet most of the year, averaging 3–5 inches of rain per month for much of the year. Western Texas—farther from the Gulf’s moisture—receives just over half an inch per month during winter and between 1–2 inches during summer months. West Texas summer precipitation usually comes from local-scale convective storms, but it can also be driven by the Southwest Monsoon.

In 2011, NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) launched the Southern Plains Drought Early Warning System (DEWS). The Southern Plains DEWS is a network of State, regional and national partners that share information and coordinate actions to help communities in the region prepare for and cope with drought.

Historical Drought Conditions in Texas

Drought is a normal climate pattern that has occurred in varying degrees of length, severity, and size throughout history. Below, you can look back at past drought conditions for Texas according to 3 historical drought indices. The U.S. Drought Monitor is a weekly map that shows the location and intensity of drought across the country since 2000. The Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is a monthly depiction of drought based on precipitation (with data going back to 1895). U.S. Drought Monitor

The U.S. Drought Monitor (2000–present) depicts the location and intensity of drought across the country. Every Thursday, authors from NOAA, USDA, and the National Drought Mitigation Center produce a new map based on their assessments of the best available data and input from local observers. The map uses five categories: Abnormally Dry (D0), showing areas that may be going into or are coming out of drought, and four levels of drought (D1–D4). Learn more.
